Artist Statement
My interest in photography began when I was a teenager and buying a 36-exposure roll of film meant you were serious. Times change and today, I can capture 36 images in three seconds. Digital photography opened a world of creative expression for me, and with its arrival, my interest became a passion. Nature photography is my primary focus and I enjoy photographing subjects ranging from plant close-ups to animals to sweeping landscapes.
Many variables contribute to a compelling image starting with the basics of subject, focus and exposure. The component I feel elevates photography to art is composition. My goal is to make choices in lighting, element placement, background and depth of field that best convey the essence of a subject and present it in an emotionally appealing way. My settings, location and patience are factors I control, but nature provides the subject, colors, patterns and textures that continually leave me in awe.
Photography brings me joy as a solitary activity but has also led to wonderful friendships and travel experiences. Time in nature soothes our soul, piques our desire to learn more and leads to advocacy for the beauty that opens our eyes and touches our heart.
For those interested in my equipment, I use Canon cameras and lenses, including a 100mm macro, 17-40mm wide-angle, 70-200mm zoom and a 100-400mm telephoto. I shoot raw images using manual settings. Whether your camera is a cellphone, at an entry or professional level, you have the tool you need to turn moments into memories and memories into art.
